From Lisa, Kansas: My husband and I just love the OK Reporter. We actully look forward to the first ten days of each month when the magazine is published. The article about the artist in Oklahoma was filled with such wonderful photos of his work. My husband loved the horned toad story. It actually opened up an hour long story about his youth that I had never heard before. Thanks OK Reporter. Your Are The Best.
Thanks Lisa...you gave us a bit of the "big head"! The article about Alan is shorter than I would have liked, but I think still gives a good portrait of the man. Yeh...I like the Horned Toad story myself.

From Berry, Kansas: The Rattan school district story just blows my mind! Since when does a state allow a school district to take funds dedicated to the education of children and spend that money to build homes and develop business districts. If these are actual facts, then something is terribly wrong with both the State of Okahoma and the self centered jerks running that school district.
Think you pretty much "said it all" Berry.

From Jenny, Arkansas: The school district story is just another example of how corrupt our education system is. I went to school in Rattan and tried to go to college after I graduated. I had to attend a junior college just to catch up with the basic elements that every other public school system presents to their students. Your story sure hit home as I read it. Interests and money always being with those that run the system and not the real education of the students. Two million dollars for a new gym? And who on earth in that area of Oklahoma is going to be able to afford that tax issue! Just criminal!
Jenny, sounds like you "caught up" on your education. Interesting to hear from somebody that went through their school district. Obviously, we have heard from others...but sadly...they pretty much have the same horror story that you have. Like the article states...we are always for the education investment of the students. While rodeos and basketball are great weekend events...they very seldom produce life long incomes for the majority of those that participate in them. And to have a school district waste the amount of money they have on land and housing...for a school district that is not expanding in terms of students...in a depressed area of income...is nothing less than criminal.

From Thomas, Florida: Very cool that you let people write articles and you print them. The OKR is a very unique e-zine. Stay that way.
Thanks Thomas. We get in some trouble every now and again..but..we really enjoy the feedback we get from our readers.

From Kim, Colorado: The school in Rattan should be ashamed. Lawless seems to be the right name for those involved.

From Ben, New York:  I looked up the "facts and data" you printed about the Rattan School District. I was surprised that your data was "right on the mark". How could a school district whose has a academic rating that is less than the state average even consider spending money on things like building gyms and rodeos and land. There purpose should be to educate. Sadly, it seems that they have chosen to take a road that excepts less from their students.
The one thing we want to make clear is, regarding the API scores that have been generated by this school district is...it is not as much a reflection on the students as it is a reflection on the ability of the teachers to raise their students to a higher level of knowledge and skills which would be reflected in the API score.

From Janet, Wyoming:  Your series on Rural America and the school district in Rattan Oklahoma shows that things are the same all over in small town America. It is no different here. It is all about who is in charge and what they want. It is not about the goal of the community or the betterment of those that live in small town America.
Don't think we can add to your thought(s).

From Jon, New London Africa: We love your e-zine.

From Betty, New England: I look forward to the first of each month. That is when the OKR is published. I have learned that you update your published paper several times throughout the month, I guess when you guys get something else to say? Anyway, I just opened the OKR this morning and read enough of your Holiday Edition that I had to write and say..."Wonderful job"! I really like the work done by your paper. And I tell everybody about you. Thanks for all the great thoughts.
Well Betty...all we can say to that is thank you so very much. the Holiday issue is going to expand over the next 90 days. So feel free to print our any articles and such of this special addition.

From Jack, Oklahoma: I am sitting here this morning, drinking my coffee and reading the OKR about the school district in Rattan. I will not tell you what I, and most people, think about those folks for fear of taking away from what I have to say. It is almost like the children are running the place. They will do what they want to do without any real thought for the future. They will do what they want to do regardless of the ultimate effect they will have on the future of the students in their little school district. Sadly, it is like that all over Oklahoma because the school districts have been set up to be virtually independant from local control. In other words they can do whatever they want to do with your money. My borther lives in Texas. In Texas they would string 'em up for such a waste of funds. But this is Oklahoma. When it is all said and done. I would bet you that somebody in that school district is going to "come out on top" as they from all of this.
Hmm.....

From William, Oklahoma: Your article on the rattan school district is very good. The links you have provided certainly make solid points of support for your point of view. And your idea about spending money on a learning center is really something they should consider. Once again, nicely done.
Thank You.

From Jill, New Hampshire: I was telling a friend of mine that I was cooking Thanksgiving dinner for my husband's family this year. I have no idea what i am doing. Then, a friend told me to read your e-zine.  OMG, right there in your paper is everything I need to know regarding recipes and everything. They are written in a way that is easy to understand, with lots of information. And there are so many recipes to choose from. You guys have saved my life this year! Thanks so very much!
Cooking is a pashion of our publisher. We are so glad that our recipes will help you this year.

From Robert, Kansas: Obviously the OKR is a fan of Obama. The article you guys wrote about Palin is so one sided.
Yes it is "one sided"...hence the name of the article "The Real Sarah Palin" . I take it that you did not read the other articles we wrote about Obama and Clinton and McCain in the past?

From Jim, Canada: My friends really enjoyed reading your e-zine during the American elections. Your paper has no trouble in expressing the views of its writers. Lots of fun and at the same time most of the articles really can make you think about what you are reading. Thanks for being.
Lord we thought the elections were never going to end!

From Hallie, Nevada: I am really enjoying the OKR's Holiday series. Great stories for everybody and the food is wonderful. You guys rock!
Oh Hallie...it has been years since we "rocked"...but that is the best "Thank You" we have had in some time now!

From Mike, Washington: I hope your "Quick Thoughts" becomes a series. I like the way it is structured. It gets right to the point of the subject. Nicely done OKR.
Thanks Mike. We will try this fornat/article over the next few months and see how it works for us.

From Timothy,  Oklahoma: What became of the Rattan School district series that you guys were writing for so many months? There are many people that I know that were keenly interested in the series.
At this point in time, there is really nothing more to write regarding the series position of the Oklahoma Reporter and the Rattan School District and the new gym, land and such. But, should things develop in the future we will follow up on that series. The point of the series was to not point fingers at the Rattan School District but to bring to the attention of our readers and hopefully those in the Rattan community that there might be a better direction when it comes to spending nearly two million dollars other than a basketball gym and rodeo and 300 acres of undeveloped land. Writing the series, also made us aware of the fact that, behind the scenes, the small community of Rattan was being divided between those that wanted a new gym and those that felt moeny should be spent in other directions and those that can not afford a tax increase regarding any of it! We discovered that many people in the community had opinions but were afraid to voice those opinions to the school district. As a result of such, the OKR felt it would stop writing about the challenges related to this situation until the community itself could come to grips and actually (openly) speak about this concern.
